Midwifery care for displaced populations
Summary:
The paper explores to enhance the delivery of prenatal care to the primary care of immigrant women and refugees and their families and to promote safe pregnancy and childbirth through effective access to quality maternal and newborn care.
The increasing number of female migrants and refugees creates an additional need to reinforce the needs of reproductive health services. The perinatal period of displaced populations is additionally burdened by the low socio-economic situation, the epidemiological profile of their countries, communication difficulties and poor health education. The differences between those women calls us for the strengthening of their individual health status, access to maternity care, quality of care and maternity care policy and funding systems. About the major issues faced by women of these vulnerable populations during childbirth, good practice and quality recommendations are provided to enable them to provide sensitive and fair childbirth care.
This paper proposes an integrated, culturally sensitive approach to maternity care for immigrant, asylum seekers or refugees women.
