The volcanic complex of Santorini. Risk assessment scenarios
Summary:
The island of Santorini has been a landmark for the scientific community, due to its volcanic activity not only in the past but also in the present. A step closer to the complex picture it presents is achieved in the context of this dissertation. The first chapter refers to the characterization of the island as an island of volcanoes. Then the characteristics of the volcano and in general the history of volcanism are determined. There is also a historical background to the well-known Minoan eruption. Much of the work is devoted to the Columbus submarine volcano, which is on the northeast side of the island. More specifically, reference is made to studies that took place between 2001 and 2006, through some specific systems.
The caldera and seismic activity are also determined. Another major chapter is Palea and Nea Kameni, followed by the Geomorphology of the island and the scenarios of reactivation and assessment of volcanic hazards. These are scenarios that were submitted to a report prepared by the Subcommittee on Civil Protection - Volcanic Risk of the Special Committee for Scientific Monitoring of Santorini Volcano. It is reasonable that the issue of seismic activity is approached from 1980 to 2012. Based on diagrams, however, information is provided until 2014 which is very important for the broader assessment of seismic activity.
