Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in terminally ill patients: Bioethic reflections
Summary:
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a medical practice of major importance, bearing legal and ethical consequences. Patients with terminal illness are a special subgroup, which often has no indication of applying CPR. Terminally ill patients are on palliative care and have a poor prognosis. In Greece there is no legislative framework to guide end of life decisions and palliative care. This induces the danger of ethical damage and legal disputes involving the patients and the healthcare professionals.
