Knowledge and attitude of first-year and fifth-year students of School of Dentistry of N.K.U.A on HIV and the patients with HIV / AIDS
Summary:
Introduction: Since 1996-1997, data of HIV treatment began to change dramatically,
both globally and in Greece, thanks to the efficacy of the improved antiretroviral
therapy and successful application of HAART, making ΗIV- infection a chronic illness.
Improving the knowledge, regarding the HIV- virus of young people and especially
future health scientists, including dentists, is important both for reducing the
transmissibility of the virus and for recognizing oral lesions even when the disease is
at an early stage.
Objectives: The purpose of this master thesis is to evaluate the improvement of the
knowledge and behavioral attitudes of the dental students of University of Athens
regarding HIV virus and patients with HIV / AIDS and to identify any deficiencies of
their knowledge on this subject.
Methods: The questionnaire that was designed was answered by 86 students of the
first year and 78 students of the fifth year of the School of Dentistry. The
questionnaire consists of closed-ended questions, which are classified into 5 (five)
areas: 1) demographics 2) general knowledge of HIV / AIDS 3) attitudes towards HIV
/ AIDS patients 4) medical knowledge of HIV virus and 5) behavioral attitudes during
the provision of dental treatment to HIV patients.
Results: The response rate of the study was 82% (n = 164). The results of the study
show that in the general questions about HIV / AIDS as well as the medical questions
about HIV- virus, concerning the transmission of the virus during dental practice and
the oral manifestations of HIV patients, fifth-year students achieve higher
percentages of correct answers than first-year students, and this difference is
statistically significant. (p-value=0,0000009519<0,05 και p-value=0,0006< 0,05). In
addition, there is an inversely proportional relationship between self-assessment of
knowledge and the percentage of correct answers to questions that concern the
medical knowledge of HIV virus by fifth-year students. Finally, it seems that the fifth-
year students of the School of Dentistry of Athens, in contrast to the first-year
students, have a positive attitude towards HIV-infected people, as 31% of first-year
and 56% of fifth-year students say they feel able to provide proper dental treatment
to HIV / AIDS patients.
Conclusions: Despite the improvement of the knowledge of the students of the
School of Dentistry of the University of Athens during the fifth year curriculum, it is
considered significant to increase the number of regular seminars and compulsory
courses attended by these students. This fact is going to ensure that they are fully
and consistently informed about HIV- virus and the disease it causes, while at the
same time this fact is going to raise their social awareness of HIV patients.
