Summary:
This thesis introduces to the history of air pollution -the so-called "nephos"- of Athens. It combines inputs from the History of Science and Technology and Environmental History. The thesis relies on a synthesis of the relevant secondary literature as well as on primary research on engineering magazines, newspapers, and archival sources, especially ones of relevance to PERPA (the Environmental Pollution Control Project of Athens). Special attention is paid to the PERPA measurement techniques, predictions, and policies regarding the Athens air pollution.
