The evolution of Ancient Greek textbooks of the first grade of high school
Summary:
This thesis examines the development of Ancient Greek textbooks based on their evaluation criteria. More specifically, a table including 45 criteria was designed and formulated in order to categorize and explore the textbooks of Ancient Greek of the first grade of high school issued from the establishment of the constitution of the modern Greek state to date. Regarding to the theoretical framework, concepts and themes are identified, such as the school textbook and its functions, the curriculum and the historical evolution of Greek education. Then, the evolution of the history of the lesson in Ancient Greek is presented, as well as the international and Greek lists of criteria based on which school textbooks are evaluated. In terms of methodology, archival research was selected, and in particular, documentary analysis was conducted based on existing data such as school textbooks, Greek Government Sheets and journals. The research archives were identified and collected by a) the Museum of Education of the University of Athens, b) national and university libraries, c) the digital library of the Institute of Education Policy and d) internet resources. The textbooks of this study were therefore evaluated based on the number of criteria they meet from the relevant table created after the bibliographic review and archival research. The criteria examine a) Content – Scientific Validity, b) Content – Social Validity, c) Presentation – Structural Characteristics and d) Pedagogical and Didactic Suitability. The present study was conducted during the academic year 2018-2019, when a total of 143 textbooks of Ancient Greek of the first grade of high school were examined, out of which 43 were evaluated as most are new versions of the initial ones. Research results show that the proposed criteria can be used as an evaluation tool of textbooks in general, and specifically of Ancient Greek textbooks. The findings provide information on Ancient Greek school textbooks as to whether or not they meet the criteria, the strengths or weaknesses they hold, their points for improvement and their evolution comparatively. Based on the present research, it can be argued that the textbooks of Ancient Greek of the first grade of high school have been greatly improved to this day as their quality is gradually enriched.
