Ainos and Thasos. Pithoi of Ainos during the Post-Byzantine period in Thasos
Summary:
The real number of the Ainian pithoi in Thassos is large. They were transferred straight from Ainos, although there are oral testimonies that some of them might have arrived through large transit markets, such as Smyrna. The problems we encountered while studying this large number of samples during the last ten years were: difficulties in access, as most of the pithoi were found in private areas, in houses and oil presses, the damage of their structural and decorative details, inscriptions, and decorative patterns and the full bibliographical absence on the subject, something that certainly applies to the whole post-byzantine pithos production in the North Aegean. So far, approximately 700 pithoi have been identified and studied in the areas of Thasos. A large number of pithoi was studied in the two oil presses of Skala Sotiros. According to typology, they can be divided into two types, each of them having several categories and variations: into pithoi with a neck, which are the smallest as a rule, and pithoi without a neck which are of larger dimensions. Despite the gradual decay of Ainos after the half of the 19th century, the pithos production does not seem to be significantly influenced, since after the half of the century and up to 1923 there are plenty of testimonies for the circulation of its impressive pithoi.
