The post intensive care syndrome
Summary:
Introduction Syndrome after treatment in ICU (post-intensive care syndrome, PICS) is more frequent, with percentages ranging worldwide mainly due to different methodological approach, severity of disease and many other factors. The purpose of study was to assess the impact of the syndrome after the intensive care unit (PICS). The individual purpose is to assess the effects of the family syndrome after ICU care (PICS-F).
The methodology consisted of search and research studies reviewed during the past five years on data-bases, but mostly on "pubmed" regarding post-intensive care syndrome in patients and caregivers.
Results Based on the literature and systematic review, patients treated in ICUs are greatly affected not only physically but also psychologically, affecting their overall quality of life, even after leaving the ICU. The same effects are present in the family caregivers of these individuals.
Conclusions In conclusion, both the patients themselves and their caregivers are significantly affected after exiting the ICU. In particular, they have psychological and physical effects, having a negative impact on their quality of life.
