Use Of Augmentative Alternative Communication Systems from intubated patients in the Intensive Care Unit: benefits of their implementation
Summary:
Communication limitation, that intubated patients in ICUs undergo, is an unpleasant, stressful process, emotionally negatively charged. Additional to adverse effects on patient’s psychology, the inability to communicate can also lead to problems related to hospitalization and nursing care, as events such pain may ignored or underestimated. Common ways of communicating, such as head nods, gestures or mouthing words are not effective enough. Use of AAC is not a common intervention in the field of ICU, but it has many positive effects. Utilizing various AAC systems or materials increases patient’s positive emotions reduces frustration and increases the frequency, ease and quality of communication interactions. Illustrated printable communication board, which presents images about patient’s symptoms and basic needs as well as an alphabet table, seems to be a very cost-effective, quality, and economical intervention. Moreover, the use of a tablet computer, with the appropriate software, designed for patients, satisfies the participants and provides a satisfactorily and quicker communication.
