Introduction: Heart failure as a chronic clinical syndrome affects all the aspects of patient’s life and has negative emotional, family, social and financial impact to the patient and his family. Objective: This research aims to evaluate the anxiety and depression level
in patients with heart failure. Material and methods: The study sample consisted of 120 patients with heart failure who were admitted in GHA «HIPPOKRATIO». Data was collected using theZung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale questionnaire. Statistical trials of t-test and anova have been applied, tatistical
material was considered the threshold of 5%. Statistical analysis have been
conducted using the SPSS-23.Results: Out of 120 patients of the sample, 56,7% were male and 93,3% were over 60 years old. The 25,2% of the sample had NYHA II, 53,8 % had NYHA III and 21% had NYHA IV. The total score of zung-anxiety and zung-depression scale demonstrated that 35% of the sample experienced medium to severe anxiety level
while 56,3% had depression. The following groups appeared to have higher levels of depression and anxiety: women p=0,003 and p=0,017 respectively, patients over 60 years old p=0.004 and p=0,012, patients of lower educational level, p=0,019 and p=0,018 and patients who were retired, p=0,045 p=0,017. Patients with heart failure NYHA IV were experiencing high level anxiety p=0,001 and extreme anxiety levels p<0,001. Patients who had limited or no information regarding their treatment proved to face higher levels of anxiety and depression, p=0,003 and p=0,036 respectively , and those looking for frequent medical treatment as well , p= 0.004 and p<0,001.Conclusions: Anxiety and depression level in patients with heart failure is affected by clinical factors such as disease stage, existence of other diseases simultaneously, sociodemographic variants like age, sex educational level and how well informed are by health professionals.Those patients’ feelings should be evaluated constantly and treated accordingly.
