Dysfunctional internet use by adolescents in an urban environment (Athens, Greece): A case - control study
Summary:
Dysfunctional Internet Use, the latest clinically established term, refers to excessive engagement with internet use which results in significant impairment of the individual’s ability to function in various fields of his or her life, for an extended period of time. It is a multifactorial phenomenon that concerns every society throughout the contemporary world.
The present study aims to investigate the factors (personal, familial, social) connected with Dysfunctional Internet Use by adolescents. The adolescents under examination grew up in an urban environment, during the most serious economic crisis the modern world has experienced.
The clinical sample consists of adolescents who were referred to the Adolescent Health Facility of the 2nd Department of Pediatrics and were diagnosed as "Internet Addicted". The Control Group consists of adolescents who were referred to the 2nd Department of Pediatrics for reasons which were not linked to Dysfunctional Internet use. Our data comes from a Case-Control study in which age and gender were matched.
The results of the multivariate logistic regression showed that the family status (the adolescent not living with two parents) is a statistically significant factor in the development of the symptoms of Dysfunctional Internet Use. Protective factors are participation in physical activity and antisocial behavior.
