Family Portraits: Alternative models of family structure in Greece.
Summary:
This paper will examine the transformation, in content, structure and composition that families have undergone in the last few decades. In chapter one, we are introduced with the analyzation of relevant sociological theories that perplex the family and its changes in a wider social, cultural and political context. Furthermore, chapter one analyses 'alternative' family patterns, as well as, how these patterns prevail in the Western world. The ‘alternative’ family patterns are examined with reference to the historical transformations that allowed the dissemination of these unconventional, non-traditional family formations.
The second chapter of this paper analyzes the alterations that families have undergone, specifically, in Greece. The "Portrait of the modern Greek family” is outlined via the historical recursion. Therefore, we can see, in retrospect, the hints of change in culture, in perceptions of gender roles, in sexuality and ultimately in family. Via this historical recursion we can also contemplate the impact of the economic and social crisis on modern Greek society and the causes that led individuals to break up family ties.
The paper concludes with the tales and memories of members of modern Greek families, through a film and an educational guide that accompanies the film, in Part II. The purpose of the guide is to support the audiovisual material as an educational tool in Highschool. The guide is making a reference to the stories of the protagonists, and identifies the real - life situations, as well as, the aspects of relationships between the members of these various forms of modern Greek families that the teacher must point out in class.
