Friendship and school bullying in adolescence
Summary:
High quality friendship plays an important role during adolescence as it is a protective factor, reducing the likelihood that a teenager will be affected by school bullying, a multidimensional phenomenon with multiple effects on growth. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Greek high school students perceive friendship as a protective factor against the occurrence of bullying in the school environment. In addition, gender factors and other demographic factors were taken into account for conducting the survey. The sample of the study consisted of 317 senior-high-school students (grades A and B) in the greater Attica region. The Friendship Quality Scale, the McGill Friendship Questionnaire-Friend’s Functions, and the School Bullying Questionnaire were used for this purpose. The findings showed the existence of statistically significant relationships between school bullying and adolescent friendships. Security have been found to be important aspect of a friendly relationship acting as predictive factor in the occurrence of school bullying. Furthermore, gender seems to be associated with the possibility of developing bullying behavior. The results help to develop effective intervention programs in school communities.
