The One and Triune God: Tertullian's contribution to the theological formulation of the triune doctrine
Summary:
The Latin writer Tertullian (155 - 240 AD) introduced the term "Persona" into theology. He is the first author to use the word "Trinitas" in Latin. He claims that the persons of the Holy Trinity can be measured so that their own "distinctio" and "dispositio" do not create a "separatio" between them. The three divine persons are One (unum), but they are not a single person (unus). In the History of Dogma Tertullian has the great advantage of having given theology the foundations for the correct formulation of the Trinitarian doctrine: "una substantia - tres personae". Although he went through four different phases of his life, that is, from the "orthodox phase" to the complete "Montanist phase", his theology does not seem to have been negatively affected, as evidenced by his dogmatic work "Adversus Praxeam", the diamond of trinitarian theology.
