Study and analysis of the characteristics of jazz vocal improvisation
Summary:
The present study examines the characteristics of singing improvised interpretation in jazz music. The first part describes the key features of a vocal jazz improvisation which are breathing control, vibrato and glissando music effects, rhythmic feel and jazz phonetics. The second part focuses on melodic and rhythmic analysis from improvised transcriptions by Ella Fitzgerald and Adelaide Hall. At last, the third part shows the influence of Ella Fitzgerald’s and Adelaide Hall’s voices on trumpet and tenor saxophone through a comparative study of vocal and instrumental improvisations (using diagrams from the computer software “Praat”).
In conclusion, a detailed analysis of Ella Fitzgerald’s phonetics shows an important element of her innovative style expanding the qualities of the Jazz language.
