The sygathisto "Leventis ise matia mou"
Summary:
This study investigated a part of the rich violinistic tradition of the area of Grevena and especially of the mountainous villages of northern Pindos, through the song “Leventis ise matia mou”, recorded by Nikos “Sioulis” Gioulekas. To that end, the research was structured around three themes. The first was focused on time and space, namely the study of modern bibliography concerning the Grevena region and the Greek Traditional Violin. The second was focused on the analysis of the data that resulted from field research and semi-structured interviews with local musicians, descendants of old musician families of the region. The third was tailored around the author’s personal expertise as an active, professional musician specialized in Greek Traditional Violin. The analysis of the recording was conducted in a twofold manner through: a.) a folk musician’s perspective and b.) systematic musicological analysis via the recording of music with the use of western musical notation, rhythm analysis, motif and tropical identification. Results suggest a differentiation between the vocal and violin parts and in particular, a rhythmic and tropical enrichment of the vocal melody from the violin. Finally, further implications related to the regional musicians, the structure of Sygathisto and the violin style of Nikos Gioulekas are presented.
