Assessment of the implementation of electronic ordering for healthcare consumables by nursing staff within the hospital environment
Summary:
This paper attempts to describe the procedures of the Hospital’s supply chain, with which the hospital achieves ordering, recording of stock and of consumables, for all types of hospital provisions necessary for the operation of nursing departments within the Hospital environment. It presents the picture of the integrated information technology systems of the hospitals. These systems are instrumental in the effective and efficient supervision of all the procedures concerning hospital supplies as a whole, and also the management of healthcare materials with detailed electronic records of orders, consumables, and existing stock. Special attention is placed on the fact that in Greece the electronic adaptation of such procedures has been implemented with delay, and was connected to the internationally observed expansion of the role of nurses. This expansion was shaped by the assigning to nursing staff of a series of new specialties and responsibilities, but also by legislating different educational, academic and clinical requirements for the executives of the Nursing Service. In the second part of the paper, a case study is presented of the use of information technology in the University of Athens’ Hospital “Attikon” for managing hospital supplies. Examples and images of the hospital’s computerized system are provided, and are accompanied by detailed descriptions and explanations for each individual process.
