Summary:
The Kaisariani Monastery is located in mount Hymettus. A great monastery which at times had magnificent abbots. It was a focus of literature. It had a notable library. In the monastery every so often excavations have been planned and renovation works have been carried out. Today it is not used as a monastery but only as an archeological site. The main church of the catholikon of Kaisariani Monastery belongs to the type of semi-complex, four-columned, cross-in-square church with a dome, dating to the first half of the 12th century and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple. The iconographic program of the main church has been adapted to the architectural type of the main church. The tradition is used with some renewal. The entire painted decoration of the main church is not preserved. Iconographic patterns are varied. The paintings do not have unity and homogeneity. No document is preserved with the exact chronology and the painter of the painted decoration of the main church. The surviving frescoes in terms of their iconography and style express the post-Byzantine painting approximately the beginning of the 18th century. The anonymous painter seems to have been a good craftsman, erudite, creative, and eclectic.
