Summary:
The development of the Web 2 (participatory web) has shaped a new landscape in the communication of people and the flow of information. In the new digital era citizens interact with news content and participate in its production. The spectacular infiltration of social media in every day’s life in the last decade, mainly thanks to the widespread use of smartphones, has transformed the parameters in the communication field. The media have rushed to profit from the mass acceptance of the Social Media to promote their content to the public.
In the course of their growth, Social Media have undermined the mainstream media’s potential in shaping the public agenda, and by being interactive they have changed the way journalistic content is evaluated and managed, thus redefining key tactics in journalism.
Guided by international bibliographical references, statistical surveys and scientific studies on the path, the social role as well as the course of the media and journalism in the digital world, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews, with 16 private Greek media executives.
The purpose of this paper is to explore changes made in the newsroom of both digital and traditional media, while tracing the transition of Greek journalism to the digital age.
The key parameters in our study are, on the one hand, the serious media credibility crisis as recorded in all surveys, and on the other, the trust that the Greek public attaches to social media as information platforms.
Τhe interest in reflecting on the current situation also included a personal motivation; as a professional journalist for the last 32 years, I have experienced all the stages of the evolution of journalism in Greece. The wait-and-see attitude, the embarrassment, the delay in adopting new successful practices in interaction with the public, and the defensive stance against development seem to characterize Greek journalism. Overall it may be said that in cooperation with the scientific community, it needs to engage more systematically and thoroughly in this new, different and evolving information age.
