Occupational burnout syndrome and mental resilience among educators
Summary:
The present study has attempted to investigate the occupational burnout syndrome and mental resilience in Greek educators and has examined the factors which push the latter to professional burnout as well as the agents which enhance their mental resilience. The survey included 484 primary and secondary school teachers of mainstream and special education. A questionnaire consisting of three parts was used. The first part of the questionnaire consists of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey (MBI-ES) by Maslach, Jackson and Schwab (1986), concerning the measurement of occupational burnout syndrome, the second part of the questionnaire consists of the Chinese Mental Resilience Scale (CMRS) of Sun et al. (2014), which concerns the measurement of mental resilience and the third part of the questionnaire consists of questions about the demographics and other details of the teachers, such as gender, age, marital status, teaching level etc. The results have shown that emotional exhaustion is negatively correlated with personal achievement, mental resilience, willpower, family support, optimism / self-confidence, problem solving and interpersonal interaction, and positively correlated with depersonalization. As for personal achievement, it has been observed that the former has a negative correlation with depersonalization, as well as with the percentage of absences which teachers believe are done due to stress. In contrast, there is positive correlation with mental resilience, willpower, family support, optimism / self-confidence, problem solving, and interpersonal interaction. In addition, depersonalization has a negative correlation with mental resilience, willpower, family support, optimism / self-confidence, problem solving and interpersonal interaction. Regarding the second scale of the research, it has been observed that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between mental resilience and willpower, family support, problem solving, interpersonal interaction and the percentage of absences which teachers believe are stress related.
