Summary:
Abstract
My personal experience on percussion, in my studies in conservatories since 1990, as well as in traditional percussion lessons, with teachers supporting the oral tradition as a teaching method since 1997, a need to examine and attribute issues and concerns related to the rediscovery of tradition and the redefinition of percussion's role in Greek musical reality from the 80s onwards has arisen.
This work will provide a historical overview and examine the pathways through which the contemporary image of a musician influenced by various and varied stimuli and styles, shaping his personal style and aesthetics that cannot be incorporated into specific frames and rules but composes and recreates a new style has been created. For this purpose, I met Vangelis Karipis, one of the most important percussion musicians, with a long professional career of almost 40 years providing me with an individual interview. His personal narrative is commented through a summary of the relevant literature, which deals with concepts such as tradition, orality, self-taught and aesthetic.
