Tele-rehabilitation in cardiovascular diseases: a systematic review
Summary:
Cardiovascular rehabilitation is a non-pharmacological intervention used to treat cardiovascular disease. Despite the proven benefits of cardiovascular rehabilitation, referral, compliance and participation of patients with heart disease in such rehabilitation programs are low. The alternative of tele-technology rehabilitation applications (tele-rehabilitation) has acquired great clinical importance while more and more clinical studies are being carried out to verify its effectiveness. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of tele-rehabilitation for the cardiovascular population. The databases for the search of experimental designs were PubMed, CINAHL, PEDro, CENTRAL without a specific time limit. Specific criteria were considered for the inclusion of articles in the present work. In total, 16 clinical trials were used in the present systematic review. The PEDro scale was used to assess their methodological quality, which showed 8 surveys of moderate methodological quality, 7 surveys of high methodological quality and 1 survey of low methodological quality. The results of the present review show that tele-rehabilitation appears to be an effective and safe adjunct and / or alternative form of rehabilitation for people with cardiovascular disease and is not an inferior choice in terms of efficiency in exercise capacity and quality of life in relation to traditional cardiac rehabilitation programs. Also, tele-rehabilitation programs appear to have higher compliance rates than traditional cardiovascular rehabilitation programs and may have lower costs compared to conventional programs. Studies comparing exclusive tele-rehabilitation programs with center programs show that there is no significant difference in terms of exercise capacity, quality of life, compliance and cost between the two programs.
