Investigation of the thermal and dynamic mechanisms responsible for the development of cold-core anticyclones in the Mediterranean
Summary:
The objective of the present thesis is the investigation of the upper level dynamics in the generation of moving cold-core anticyclones in the Balkans. Specifically, the dynamic mechanisms that are responsible for the formation of descending motion and the increase in the geopotential tendency are investigated. In this framework, the results of the Melbourne University automatic identification and tracking algorithm MS are used and 10 cases during the summer, as well as 10 cases during the winter are selected. Vertical velocity and geopotential tendency are investigated with the aid of the quasi-geostrophic omega equation and the geopotential tendency equation. The terms of the equations were calculated via the MetPy library of the Python Programming language with the aid of the mean sea level pressure, the geopotential height, the temperature and the horizontal components of wind speed, at the isobaric surface of 500hPa.It was found that the descending motion downstream the ridge are caused mainly by the thermodynamic and dynamic mechanisms in summer and winter, respectively. Furthermore, the cold-core anticyclones appear to be stronger in winter.
