Facebook and privacy: The case of Athenian students
Summary:
Privacy is a key concept in the freedom of the individual, which enjoys particular protection in global legal framework, and specifically in the European. However, in the world of continuous connectivity as expressed through social media, starring Facebook, the protection framework is being redefined and re-examined, creating new challenges and new data to protect it. The purpose of the present study is therefore to investigate how Athens students, as emerging adults and potential members of the scientific community of the country in the future, perceive and manage their privacy on Facebook, if they understand the potential risks associated with the medium and potential ways to protect it. A questionnaire consisting of 44 questions was used as a quantitative research tool. The sample size was 372 students from eight major Athenian universities. Students have been found aware of their privacy, suspicious of the risks and therefore protect their sensitive personal data, while deciding to share some personal information with a network of known friends because Facebook is a communication tool of their everyday lives and a means of social interaction that helps them maintain their existing social contacts. Female students and postgraduate students seem more cautious regarding their privacy on Facebook. An interesting area for further research would be a comparison between Athenian students with older residents of the city concerning the way they manage their privacy on Facebook.
