Attitudes of medical and psychology students towards mental illness: a contemporary study
Summary:
The stigma negatively affects everyone in the field of mental health from patients themselves to health professionals. On the one hand, patients due to their stigma may not seek help and if they ask, they may face difficulties, and on the other hand, health professionals due to their prejudices and attitudes are unable to establish a therapeutic relationship with their patients. The purpose of this study was to study the causal performance and attitudes of Psychology and Medical students towards people with mental disorders. Students participated in the online survey by completing the questionnaire on Google Forms. The research was divided into five phases. Students' causal ratings for mental illness were first assessed. Next, there were three vignettes, which were randomly presented to each participant and resulted in three different experimental conditions: (a) major depressive disorder, (b) schizophrenia, and (c) borderline personality disorder. After the vignette, the students filled in the Attitude Questionnaire, which evaluated their attitudes towards the person in the vignette. Then, they completed the Scale of Semantic Differentiation and finally, their socio-demographic data. The results showed that participants who attribute mental illness to biological factors tend to consider people with a mental disorder dangerous, and those who do not have knowledge of Psychopathology have more negative attitudes towards these people. For each disorder individually, participants in the depression group showed less negative attitudes, while in the schizophrenia group they scored high rates in terms of risk and avoidance.
