Smog in Athens during Economic Crisis and Environmental Inequality: an Approach from the Perspective of History and STS
Summary:
In this master thesis, which was prepared in the context of the Graduate Program ‘History and Philosophy of Science and Technology’, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, National Kapodistrian University of Athens, we present our study of the appearance of smog in Greece during the period 2012-14. This smog was a serious environmental and urban problem. In the following pages, we approach it from the field of study known as ‘Environmental Inequality’. The central aim of Environmental Inequality is to treat the environment as a 'good' that is subject to processes and transformations within social contexts. The environment, understood as a good, is unevenly distributed to society. The costs of environmental problems arising from its use are also unevenly distributed in society as environmental inequalities are linked to social inequalities. From this perspective, we have studied how the smog under consideration was linked to social inequalities in the urban space. To do so, we relied on History of Technology, STS (Science, Technology, Society—Science and Technology Studies) and Environmental History.
In order to reach our goal, we first studied to the field of Environmental Inequality - from where it derives, its ideological and philosophical origins, its goals, and the tools it uses. Environmental Inequality is a privileged field for understanding environmental problems. We then moved on to collect data from technical communities related to it, which we interpreted from History of Technology, STS and Environmental History perspectives.
