Examination of cognitive impairment in Examination of cognitive impairment in hereditary spastic paraplegia
Summary:
Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a disorder which belongs to a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases, where the main clinical symptoms include progressive spasticity and lower-extremity weakness. Although HSP is believed to mostly impair the corticospinal tract and leave the cognitive domain unaffected, some studies suggest that this is not the case. The aim of this particular research, is to attempt a more apparent and valid inspection of the specific disease. According to our results, almost all participants present cognitive impairment. A dysexecutive syndrome seems to be the most distinguished finding among the patients. with an intercurrent impairment in social cognition as well. In a neuroanatomic level, this specific decline, might suggest a dysfunction localized in the frontal area of the brain in HSP patients.
