The Geopolitics of the Cyprus Problem and the Rearmament of the Cyprus Armed Forces as a Geopolitical Factor for Power Reallocation in the Geopolitical Complex of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea
Summary:
With the use of the Interdisciplinary Scientific Methodology of Systemic Geopolitical Analysis, as it has been introduced to the Hellenic Academia by Ioannis Th. Mazis, Professor of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the present essay consists of a Geopolitical approach to the Cyprus Problem, and more particularly, to its Defence/Security aspect. In the first part of the essay, there is a historic review of the Cyprus Problem since 1974 (after the Turkish Invasion and Military Occupation of the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus (about 37% of its whole territory) until 2004, when the Republic of Cyprus became a full member - state of the European Union, after the rejection of the Annan Plan for the settlement of the Cyprus Problem, by the Greek population of Cyprus (in the 2004 Referendum which has been proposed by then Secretary - General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan). In the second part of the essay, there is implementation of the Systemic Geopolitical Analysis methodology, with the use of the Geopolitical Factor of Defense/Security. In the third part, the essay proceeds to the geopolitical procedure of Geostrategic Synthesis, and several defense and security options are proposed, as well as proposals concerning new military equipment that can be acquired by the Armed Forces of the Republic of Cyprus in conjunction with the possibility of confronting the occupation power Turkey, as an aggressive and irredentist neighbour.
