Summary:
The purpose of this diploma thesis is to study the aspects and representations of the child in the translated work of Erich Kästner for children during the Weimar Republic and until the rise of National Socialism.
The first chapter briefly examines the childhood in the Weimar Republic, pointing out the consequences of World War I on children, which also suggest changes in the children-literature of this period. Moreover, the chapter analyzes the main representatives of literature and the movement of New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), with references to Erich Kästner's literary work for children and adults.
The second chapter delves into the life and work of the author, focusing mainly on the factors that played a decisive role in shaping him as a person and a writer. Firstly, this diploma thesis is focused on Kästner's much-discussed relationship with his mother, while also expanding on the imprint of World War I and World War II on his work and personality.
The third chapter initially examines Erich Kästner's attitudes and views on the child. Then the aspects and representations of both boys and girls in his childhood work are identified, specifically in the books «Emil and the detectives», «Annaluise and Anton» (German: Pünktchen und Anton) and «The flying classroom».
In conclusion, Erich Kästner respects and values the children, offering them literary readings that correspond to the complex conditions they are called to live in the Weimar Republic.
