Death according to Plutarch
Summary:
The present study deals with the issue of death, as presented and analyzed by the Cheronian philosopher Plutarch. The middle - Platonist, lifelong priest of the Delphic oracle eclectically concentrates in his writings the wisdom of all predeceasing philosophers and philosophical trends and sets as an utmost goal the provision of religious and practical tools that may enable people to get familiarized with the phenomenon of death. He was mainly influenced by Plato’s teachings, Epicurus’ lack of fear of death and the apathy of the wise stoic. Taking a further step beyond, he uses the love for one’s homeland and the bravery of great personalities, but also of common people, as pillars supporting the correct attitude towards the end of life. As a genuine follower of the ancient Greek worldview, he places logic on a pedestal, in order to clearly indicate it should have a leading role. In this way, man may repel the terrifying misrepresentations that keep one away from the truth and perception of the divine.
