Implementation and Evaluation of OpenAirInterface LTE testbed
Summary:
LTE is considered a major milestone towards 5th generation (5G) mobile networks since it it used as the basis on which the latter will accrue. However, custom hardware run- ning proprietary software stacks still constitutes majority of modern 4G networks, which makes them challenging to adapt and to scale. The solution that emerged recently lies in network virtualization, where hardware and software are decoupled from each other. This approach allows the mobile operators to manage the infrastructure in a more efficient and flexible manner, while researchers are able to prototype, test and deploy the cellular protocol stack on a commodity hardware.
In this thesis work, the softwarized LTE protocol stack was implemented using open- source OAI platform in order to demonstrate the capabilities of network virtualization. 4G Core Network with and without Control and User plane separation was deployed with the help of OAI software running on x86 machine, whereas radio front end functionality of the Base station was handled by software defined radio card. The functionality of OAI LTE setup were verified by connecting Mobile Terminal with pre-programmed SIM Card, whereas the performance of each experimental testbed was evaluated using measure- ments from third party software such as Wireshark, IxChariot, SpeedTest and others.
The achieved DL and UL throughput accounted to 17Mbps and 9Mbps respectively in FDD mode on LTE Band7. The attach procedure and the underlying protocol stack were studied as well. The limitations of the setup included time-sensitivity of OAI eNB and networking settings on the machine.
