Ottoman Rethymno. Memory, Monuments and their Management
Summary:
The aim of this dissertation is the faithful representation − as faithful as possible − of the image of the Old Town of Rethymno in the Ottoman period − in terms of history, urban planning and architecture − as well as the study of the relations between Cretan Christians and Cretan Muslims.
The most characteristic Ottoman buildings of all categories are recorded and their treatment by the inhabitants of the city, but also by the Greek nation-state, mainly after the second half of the 20th century is examined.
The study of the relations of Christians with Muslims during their period of coexistence aims at "decoding" these relations, which are usually misinterpreted or imprinted in the collective memory as hostile. It is concluded that the conception of the exclusively hostile relations between these two popoulations is anachronistic and based on a nationalistic background. The change of this conception may lead to a change in the way in which the Ottoman period and its surviving monuments are treated.
Finally, proposals are made for the promotion of the Ottoman monuments of Rethymno and their integration in the history of the city as well as in the consciousness of the local community and visitors, which will contribute not only to the emergence of the many identities of the space but mainly to the presentation of a more comprehensive view of the town's society in the Ottoman period.
