Life cycle analysis of recycled construction materials and RES in the built environment.
Summary:
In this work a case study of a house in Athens is being assessed with the use of a Life Cycle Analysis tool. The results compare the use of conventional building materials and the use of recycled building materials in the construction phase. Two end scenarios are being analyzed, the landfill and the recycle scenario. The results show that when comparing both circular scenarios to both conventional scenarios, it appears that the circular have less environmental impact in all categories.
Next, the use of photovoltaics was studied in comparison with the use of a wind turbine in both urban and rural environments.
The results show that the impacts of the PV module are higher than those of the wind turbine in all categories except those of particulate matter formation and minerals. However, the impacts of fossil fuels have the most significant difference, as photovoltaics are more energy intensive. Furthermore, photovoltaic systems are more beneficial to the environment compared to wind turbines when placed on the built environment, while wind turbines perform better on rural areas due to their higher capacity factor on them.
The study concludes that significant decrease in CO2 emissions and other pollutants would result from a shift to recycled materials in the construction and from changing the landfill disposal method to recycling. Moreover, if energy source is changed from fossil to renewable, environmental impact of electricity production is drastically reduced.
