Τess and Sarah as transcedental heroines in the novels Tess of the D’Urbervilles and The French Lieutenant’s Woman of Thomas Hardy and John Fowles
Summary:
Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles and John Fowles' The French Lieutenat’s Woman are considered two of the most pivotal works of 19th and 20th century English literature and are interconnected in many levels. The first, a classic Victorian novel and the second a modern one albeit with postmodern elements, have two female protagonists. In this paper I will investigate the relationship of Tess d'Urbervilles and Sarah Woodruff as fallen women of Victorian society, examine their relationships with the women of their time and the male heroes of the novels and analyze their correlations with the elements of nature, religion and tradition to define whether they can be seen as going beyond their definitions and whether they come across nowadays as transcendental heroines.
