Breast cancer in pregnancy
Summary:
Breast cancer during pregnancy is a rare but at the same time existent entity that the modern obstetrician-gynecologist is called upon to deal with in collaboration with a mammologist, oncologist, cytologist, radiologist, radiotherapist and neonologist in specially organized centers . Mammography, breast ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging can be done safely during pregnancy. Interpretation of suspected specimens for malignancy by cytological examination after needle aspiration requires particular attention in pregnancy. To confirm the diagnosis of breast cancer in pregnant women, biopsy with a sample removal of the tissue should be selected. Modern surgical treatment of pregnant women with breast cancer includes segmental excision of tumor, mastectomy, axillary lymph node clearance, and sentinel lymph node biopsy and is considered safe in all trimesters of pregnancy. Chemotherapy should be postponed for the second or third trimester of pregnancy, and radiotherapy should be applied during the postpartum period. The use of targeted therapies and adjuvant hormone therapy has not yet been accepted in the treatment of breast cancer in pregnancy. Selective abortion can only be indicated for those who are in their first trimester of pregnancy and are at the final stage of the disease.
