Comparison of the amplitude of sensory nerve action potentials of sural and dorsal sural nerve
Summary:
Introduction: Nerve conduction studies of the sural and dorsal sural nerve has
been reported to be a sensitive method for early detection of peripheral
neuropathies. The objective of this study is to establish reference data for dorsal
sural sensory nerve action potential amplitude in the Greek population and to
compare it with the sural sensory nerve action potential.
Methods and materials: a prospective neurophysiological study for recording
the amplitude of sensory nerve action potential was conducted in 30 sural and
dorsal nerves from healthy participants, stratified into three age groups.
GraphPad Prism 7.0. statistical program was used for all statistical analyses.
Results: the amplitude of sural sensory nerve action potential was 23.08 ±
1.901 mV (P<0.0001) and the amplitude of dorsal sural sensory nerve action
potential was 6.07 ± 0.592 μV (P<0.0001). A significant age-related decrease
of both these amplitudes was observed. The mean ratio of the amplitude of
sural sensory nerve action potential to the amplitude of dorsal sural sensory
nerve action potential was 4.11 ± 1.33 (range 2.21 - 7.22)
Discussion: this study might be helpful in providing reference data for the
amplitude of sural and dorsal sural sensory nerve action potential in Greek
population.
