Promotion of former Military Camp Kodra: Creation of a Memory and Culture Cell
Summary:
Since 1994, the year the Army left Kodra Military Camp at Cape Karabournaki, the issue of its utilization arose strongly. The abandoned Camp was characterized at the same time as a historical site, an archeological site and a public green space. It is also one of the most privileged places in terms of location and natural beauty within the Thessaloniki’s urban complex. It is no coincidence that the French town planner Hebrard envisioned a Municipal Garden in its place.
Therefore, the present dissertation deals with the promotion of the former Kodra Camp. The thesis consists of two parts: Analysis and Composition. In the first part is done primarily the topographic and historical documentation of this area and the area of Kalamaria. Then follows the architectural documentation, while reference is made to the history of archaeological research. Below is the recent history and developments concerning the area in recent decades (interventions, legal framework). The following is the presentation of the current situation as well as the analysis of the monumental values of this area. A special chapter of the dissertation is dedicated to the relationship of the monumental ensemble with the local community. This includes human-research survey based on a specific questionnaire and targeted interviews with people involved with the space, in order to delineate the recruiters of the society. With the analysis the present thesis seeks to identify the difficulties and obstacles that keep the area of the former Camp isolated and inactive.
The second part of the dissertation, in the Composition, includes the depiction of the proposal for the promotion of the Camp based on the results of the Analysis. Due to the complex identity of the study area, a holistic solution is proposed in order to highlight the monumental values of the area. The proposed uses therefore revolve around three basic cores: Culture, Nature, Society. The ultimate goal is to emphasize the importance of the place as a public green space and to reconnect with the urban fabric.
After all, the former Camp is not a detached place, but belongs to a wider place that carries its history and its people. The former Camp is a memory space. Ancient civilizations of Thermaikos Bay, cosmopolitan bourgeois of Belle Époque and refugees of lost homelands have shaped the image of the monumental landscape. Given the dialectic relationship between a monumental ensemble and society, the present thesis attempts to highlight the role of local society in the rendering of meaning and ultimately in the redefinition of the "empty" space. Finally, the project is optimistic with the proposal of joint management of natural and cultural heritage to be an example towards sustainable development.
