Social mediation in Roma communities
Summary:
Abstract

The topic of this paper is social mediation in the Roma communities. Τhe theoretical part consists of three chapters that emerged from an extensive literature review. The questions that arose will be investigated in the second part. The first chapter deals with models of multiculturalism, the second with the social structure of the Roma community and the third with social mediation.
The research part seeks the sources of dissatisfaction of the Roma mediators regarding their profession. The aim of this paper is to identify the two most important sources of dissatisfaction of Roma social mediators. The sample consists of 50 Roma mediators from all over Greece. The statistical data were collected through a questionnaire and the statistical analysis was done through the SPSS statistical package.
The results highlighted the salary as the most important factor of dissatisfaction. The mediators do not receive the amount they would like, they are not paid with the frequency needed to meet their needs and they consider that the salary does not meet the work they offer. Another important factor of job dissatisfaction is the recognition and respect for the work of the Roma mediators. The Roma community and the mediator’s family only, to a certain extent, recognize and respect his profession, while the other stakeholders (institutions, dominant society) do not, and this seems to cause feelings of dissatisfaction, futility and frustration.
