Teachers' attitudes toward the inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder-High Functionality Autism in the mainstream class and the impact of Emotional Intelligence
Summary:
The present research deals with the attitudes of teachers of special and general education, in Primary and Secondary Education, toward the inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder - High Functionality Autism (ASD-HFA) in the mainstream class. In addition, the impact of Emotional Intelligence on these attitudes is investigated.
Clarifying the factors that influence the shaping of teachers' attitudes is fundamental because it can highlight ways to address contemporary teaching challenges and promote the implementation of successful inclusive education. In order to achieve the purpose of the research, the attitudes of 151 special and general education teachers working in Primary and Secondary education in Attica and the province were investigated. The results showed that the teachers’ education in ASD-HFA (postgraduate, seminars), the experience with a student ASD-HFA and the collaborative teaching experience can influence attitudes in a positive way. Another interesting finding is the positive correlation of the two elements of Emotional Intelligence, "emotionality" and "sociability", with the attitudes for inclusion.
