Summary:
Prepositions have been repeatedly examined regarding their ability to express spatial relations. However, the nature of Modern Greek prepositions can be shown to be mainly functional, rather than lexical. In this essay, a distinction between prepositions and spatial adverbs is attempted. For many of the prepositional elements, it is shown that they are mainly functional ones and that the category preposition is associated with the category case through intra-linguistic or cross-linguistic parallelisms. The main conclusion of this study is that prepositions should not be considered a lexical category in Modern Greek, but a functional one. The connection to the category case is enough to accept the postulation that there is a single feature system responsible for the distribution of both types of elements. Finally, the similarities between the distribution of genitive clitics and that of prepositions should be accounted for, if both types of elements realize the same syntactic structure, differing only to the extent that, for clitics, the different features are always incorporated into a single morphological unit.
