Eye injuries-Treatment in the emergency department
Summary:
Introduction: Ophthalmic trauma is an important cause of inhibition of
ophthalmic morbidity and a major cause of unilateral blindness. Overall, it is
estimated that over half a million injuries resulting from blindness occur each
year, and about 19 million people have unilateral eye injuries due to eye
injuries.
Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate the treatment of patients with
ocular trauma in the emergency department in relation to the cause of the
injury.
Methodology: This is a systematic review. For the study's needs, a thorough
review of studies was carried out in the electronic databases SCOPUS and
PUBMED, using the key words: eye, emergency department, trauma,
emergency ophthalmology in all possible combinations. Criteria for inclusion
in this review were the article to refer to the treatment of ocular trauma in the
emergency department and being published over the last five years.
Results: The review highlighted 10 articles that met the import criteria.
According to the results of this review, immediate treatment of eye injuries is
necessary as it can lead to catastrophic results for the patient. In addition, the development of protocols for the treatment of eye injuries in ED, as well as the
administration of antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of eye injuries in TEPs,
seems to be associated with a better outcome for the patient. A significant
proportion of incidents that occur in the treatment of eye injuries in ICT appear
to correspond to non-emergency situations. This leads to the conclusion that
better management of ED resources can be achieved if these incidents are
handled in structures outside the ED. There appear to be various remedies
that are primarily aimed at promoting wound healing, minimizing inflammation
and preventing potential complications.
Conclusions: Dealing with eye injuries in ED leads to the consumption of
significant resources of health services. Therefore, these patients must be
properly managed, with the right choice of therapeutic approach in
appropriate health care structures. Ophthalmology training for specialist
physicians and general practitioners is considered to be beneficial in reducing
secondary eye diseases, in addition to more effective immediate treatment of
ocular trauma.
