Assessment of the environmental status of the Greek coastal environment with regard to the descriptors D5 and D8 of the 2008/56/EC Marine Strategy Framework Directive
Summary:
This thesis presents the basic legislative framework for the protection and management of the aquatic environment at European and National level and reviews the environmental status of the marine Mediterranean waters of Greece, Malta and Cyprus in terms of nutrients and contaminants, according to Directive 2008/56/EC.
The goal of this thesis is to assess the environmental status of the marine waters of Greece in terms of nutrients and contaminants (heavy metals and organic compounds) and examine the achievement or not of good environmental status. Unpublished data of the National Monitoring Water Network of the Ministry of Environment and Energy concerning the coastal and transitional waters are used. The integrated mean values of nutrients (nitrates and phosphates), the mean values of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb και Zn) during the water sampling carried out in the spring and autumn period of 2018-2019 and the range of concentrations of organic contaminants during the water sampling carried out in the spring and autumn of 2018 at monitoring stations of Greece are examined. Also, the trophic status of marine waters is assessed based to the method of calculation of the eutrophication index (E.I.) according to Primpas 2010. The environmental status of marine waters in the assessment areas of North Aegean, Central Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Sea-Adriatic Sea and the trend of improvement are investigated. Regarding nutrients, a small percentage of coastal Water Bodies is not in good environmental status and concerns enclosed and semi-enclosed bays with intense human activity, while a large percentage of Transitional Water Bodies is not in good environmental status. With regard to pollutants, all coastal and transitional waters of the assessment areas for which data are available are in good environmental status.
