Summary:
Τhe earthquake is a natural catastrophic phenomenon quite common in Greece, since antiquity, causing significant damage.
Although earthquakes occur every day, most of them are not strong enough to be felt. These earthquakes are studied by seismologists through the indications provided by the seismic instruments that have recorded them. There are few earthquakes that become known every year, because their vibration is so strong that it can be felt by people and especially when they are accompanied by disasters and deaths. In the 20th century and especially in its first half, before the spread of television, the press contributed significantly to the transmission of earthquake news. However, because of the information it carries, it is a source even today for the study of earthquakes of that time. In the present work an attempt is made to utilize this important role that the press plays.
The purpose of this work is to record newspapers of the period 1901-1950 that refer to earthquakes of the same period as well as seismic events in order to be able to identify newspapers that have information material to study earthquakes of interest, as well as its use for calculating the intensity of four earthquakes selected from the earthquakes recorded in the table: of Oropos 20/7/1938, of Chios 23/7/1949 and of Lefkada 22/4/1948 and 30/6/1948.
With the recording of the newspapers and the processing of their information material for conducting intensities, the way of publishing the earthquakes was recorded as well as the problems that can occur in the attempt to calculate the intensity.
