Time trend of change in the groundwater quality of the Olympiada basin of P. Halkidiki - Utilization of data of the environmental monitoring program of the mining project
Summary:
Water is a natural resource, which has been exploited by the humans for many years. It is a good that is essential for our daily life, as its uses are various, and it is also crucial for the human health. Therefore, its proper use is considered necessary.
The present research begins with a literature review on the mining activity in the study area from ancient times to the present day. Furthermore, the role of the present mining company for environmental protection is analyzed with focus on the great importance of its “Environmental Monitoring Program” and specifically the monitoring of groundwater.
Continuing to the practical part of the research, the methodology is analyzed, which was used in order to systematize the provided data from the monitoring program and examine the trends of groundwater quality in the Olympias Basin with time.
The overall evaluation of the monitoring data provided by the mining company indicate that the present mining activity in the area has not induced negative impacts to groundwater quality in the Olympias Basin as evidenced by the long term stability of the measurements. It is emphasized that continuous monitoring during mining works as well as after closure is required for effective environmental protection in the wider area.
