Original Title:
The Prepalatial period at Siteia Petras through the study of undisturbed ceramic assemblages
Translated title:
The Prepalatial period at Siteia Petras through the study of undisturbed ceramic assemblages
Summary:
The subject of this thesis is the study and reconstruction of the Prepalatial phases of habitation at Petras Siteia, from the establishment of the settlement at the end of the FN, until the foundation of the First Petras Palace in the Protopalatial period. The reconstruction of the history of Petras was based on the study of ceramic material excavated on Hill I of Petras, in strata below the palatial building. The study allowed the identification of the stratigraphical sequence and of the multiple phases of habitation of the site, as well as the parallel study of these developments with the phases of use of the cemetery of Petras on the opposite Hill II. An important aspect of the study was the identification of the developments in local ceramic production and consumption, and also of the evidence for contacts with other sites, within and beyond Crete. Finally, an important aspect of the thesis is to integrate Petras into the wider context of the Prepalatial and early Protopalatial periods, both on intra- and inter-regional level.
