Summary:
Introduction: The current research in the field of cardiovascular diseases aims to propose diagnostic and / or prognostic biomarkers, which will provide accurate and timely diagnosis of these diseases, with the aim of treating them immediately and reducing the morbidity and mortality rate in human population.
Aim: The aim of this review was to explore the diagnostic performance of high sensitivity Troponin (hs-cTn) in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) symptoms.
Method: A systematic review of the literature and a search of articles in international databases (Pubmed, Cinahl, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library) was performed. Selected articles in Greek and English published in the last 5 years. 14 studies were found that met the criteria for their participation in the review.
Results: The main finding of this review was the significant improvement in diagnostic accuracy with the use of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin, especially in patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) early after the onset of symptoms. The increased prognostic value of the high-sensitivity method for detecting cardiac troponin allows for improved risk stratification. For patients presenting in ED with ICU with typical symptoms, the use of hs-cTn assays at the 99th percentile may help identify patients at low risk for OEM.
Conclusions: The use of high sensitivity cardiac troponin, as the main diagnostic tool, can significantly reduce hospital admissions and bring significant benefits to both patients and healthcare providers.
