Original Title:
Μια Φιλοσοφική Προσέγγιση των Συναισθημάτων - Τι είναι τα συναισθήματα και η συμβολή του φαινομένου της κατάθλιψης στην κατανόησή τους
Translated title:
A philosophical approach of emotions - What are emotions and the contribution of depression to their understanding
Summary:
This master thesis evaluates critically the modern philosophical theories that have attempted to apporach theoritically the question “what is an emotion”. The majority of philosohical theories of emotion hold a judgmentalist theory as they accept that emotions are judgments, or cognitive appraisals, which are responsible for the intensity of the emotional reaction. Different appaisals lead to different somatic adaptations, which in turn change the person-environment relationship and cause different emotional reactions. On the other hand, somatic theories of emotion accept that the perception of various stimulus leads directly to somatic physiological changes, the perception of which gives rise to emotional experience. The initial objective of this thesis is to present the most prominent approaches of the aforementioned philosophical theories and to critically evaluate their advantages and disadvantages. As a next step, the psychopathological phenomenon of Major Depression is analysed, based on psychiatric approaches and personal testimonies, and then the key positions of the examined philosophical theories of emotion are tested against it.
