Thyroid disease and pregnancy
Summary:
Thyroid diseases are a common condition in the general population with increasing frequency in women. Normal thyroid function is of great importance both for the fertility of women and for the normal outcome of pregnancy. The most common thyroid diseases are hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules, and thyroid cancer. These thyroid abnormalities are common in women of childbearing age and therefore appear as preexisting conditions in pregnancy or after delivery. Pregnancy is a state of intense adaptive changes in the mother body with the aim of better fulfilling the requirements of the developing fetus. A normal pregnancy results in several significant physiological and hormonal changes that alter thyroid function.
It is well known that the lack of thyroid hormones and iodine during pregnancy affects the development of the fetus and leads to problems that have impact on neuropsychotic and mental development.
Early diagnosis and management of thyroid pathological changes in pregnancy are essential for the smooth outcome of pregnancy and the birth of a normal child. Therefore, it is necessary to check at specific intervals to deal with any problems that may arise and to treat pregnant women who are already on treatment to regulate the medication they are receiving, or to treat them where necessary.
