Readers of the 1917 - A detailed presentation of the Greek Language Readers
Summary:
In 1917, Prime minister of Greece E. Venizelos will try to change education. The leaders of this initiative are D. Glinos, A. Delmouzos and M. Triantafyllides. Their idea is to employ a new genre of the Greek language in schools, which by that point was only used to everyday conversations and was considered to be non-formal. Inspired by ‘The school of Work’, a new pedagogic system that was established throughout Europe. In 1918 Triantafyllides introduces twelve new books at schoold based on his own work on grammar. The authors have the freedom of choosing any subject but on a common ground, that being that the center is the child and the real world. The main ideas of the books were partnership, the will to work, nature, religion, the love for the family and country and a critical way of thinking. Almost immediately this new system is greeted with reactions. That is why the 1917 was considered a failure, but became a pillar for other future movements that would change the Educational System of Greece.
