Health Literacy in primary and lower secondary school students: Levels, dimensions and correlations
Summary:
One of the types of literacy which is considered necessary for the creative development in contemporary societies is the one which is established on health issues. Health literacy has been widely considered in adults. However, research regarding students’ health literacy is lacking This research is the first attempt to assess the level of health literacy of students attending the Greek school.
Method: Initially, a literature review was conducted and the conceptual framework for creating the questionnaire was defined. The final configuration of the tool took place after three pilot researches following by a test-retest administration and then a nationwide survey of students from grades 7 to 10 (n = 2800).
Results: The 37-question tool named HeLiASeSS (Health Literacy Assessment for Secondary School Students) describes 9 subscales of health literacy. Specifically “find”, “understand”, “evaluate”, communicate which was divided into three forms, “functional, interactive and critical”, “apply” health information, “self-efficacy” and the “intention of active citizenship”. The instrument shows satisfactory stability (ICC = 0.943) and validity α = 0.903. Students' skills are classified at Level 2, which indicates key skills deficits that appear to make this population vulnerable in the management of health issues. Predictive factors of health literacy emerged indicating certain demographic characteristics, such as gender, mother's level of education, cognitive indicators such as learning difficulties, grade, preference of subjects like biology. Environmental support and interaction and mainly the personal interest in acquiring health knowledge seems to play an important role.
In conclusion, it is considered necessary to develop students' health literacy skills by providing them with quality, coordinated and effective skills-based health education.
